Solar-Powered Charging Stations from Motorola

Cell phones are essential in keeping everyone in the world connected, but they simply can’t work without electricity. Uganda has one of the lowest supplies of electricity in Africa and last year, Motorola provided the country with solar recharging stations run by local female entrepreneurs. Each solar-powered kiosk has a 55-watt solar panel that can charge up to 20 phones at a time. The women who run the kiosks also sell handsets, SIM cards, and provide repair services. Even locals who don’t have their own phone can use the kiosk to make calls. This project was designed to empower Ugandan women and give them entrepreneurial skills and the foundations to manage their own business.
